Today, the Center for Union Facts notes the irony of three major union organizations in the “Change to Win” coalition being embroiled in labor disputes — with each other. The Teamsters-organized staff of Canada’s United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union went on strike to protest the UFCW’s proposed use of a two-tiered system in which new employees receive significantly less in wages and benefits than veteran employees.

With free legal aid from the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, two Schreiber Foods employees from Green Bay, Wisconsin, persuaded a federal appellate court to order the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to rule in a long-delayed case the workers filed in 1989. Having refrained from formal union membership, the workers are challenging union officials’ use of their forced union dues for activities unrelated to collective bargaining, particularly union organizing costs.

Faced with an American workforce unimpressed by what they’re selling, union leaders are growing desperate to prop up their membership rolls. Their latest gambit? Make it easier to intimidate employees into joining unions, opening the floodgates of mandatory dues money.

This Christmas, we were being told to buy from Costco, not Wal-Mart; to ship our presents via UPS, not FedEx; to avoid the Lexus and buy a Ford; to drink Budweiser beer and Eight O’Clock Coffee, but only from Kroger or Farmer Jack.
Why should we do this — because of fair prices for good products? The best value? Service? Convenience? Not according to Teamsters union President James P. Hoffa.

LEECH - n. A blood-sucking parasite that clings to another for personal gain, especially without giving anything in return, and usually with the implication or effect of exhausting the other’s resources. Also see, “Labor union.”
With union bosses doing the Snoopy dance over Democrats being back in charge of Congress, now might be a good time to once again examine how Big Labor is destroying our nation’s tradition of rugged individualism and supplanting it with European socialism. Read the rest of this entry »

HOFFA WINS ANOTHER FIVE YEARS
“Teamsters President Jim Hoffa on Friday declared victory in his bid for another five-year term as head of the 1.4-million member union. Hoffa, who took office in December 1998, defeated his opponent Tom Leedham, the head of a Teamsters local in Oregon. With most of the votes counted, Hoffa had 120,215 votes — or 64 percent — to Leedham’s 6,069 votes.”

WHO YA GONNA CALL?
For the November 2006 elections, the Teamsters Union is launching a national voter hotline to assist members with problems or questions they may encounter on Election Day according to a Teamsters press release this week. Voters can call the toll-free number to report voting irregularities, intimidation or to request assistance.
The big question: What number do you call if it’s the UNION that’s violating the election laws or intimidating voters?

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST
“Brian M. McLaughlin, a Queens assemblyman who as head of the nation’s biggest municipal labor council personified New York City’s politically powerful labor movement, was arrested yesterday on federal racketeering charges involving embezzlement, receiving bribes, fraud and money laundering. Conviction on all 43 charges could send him to prison for decades.
“A 186-page indictment charges Mr. McLaughlin, 54, with illegally obtaining $2.2 million from taxpayers, labor unions and contractors over the last decade since he became president of the New York City Central Labor Council, a federation of 400 union locals.”

OK, let me try to boil this union “recruitment” thing down to it’s most basic level: An entrepreneur risks blood, sweat and tears, and often his life’s savings, to create a business - in the process creating jobs for others. Let’s say the company employs 100 people, all of whom willingly accept their jobs at the agreed-to compensation offered by the business owner. Then along comes the union Borg (“You will be assimilated!”).

GUNNING FOR REPUBLICANS
“After being outhustled by Republicans in voter turnout drives in recent years, the A.F.L.-C.I.O. plans to spend $40 million nationwide on voter education and turnout, emphasizing swing states like Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Pennsylvania.”

Ballots go out this week for a critically important election in November. No, not the referendum on what is passing for Republican “leadership” in Washington. I’m talking about the election to decide which big-government liberal union boss will run the Teamsters for the next several years.
