One of the more egregiously misnamed bills in the history of Congress has got to be the “Employee Free Choice Act,” a measure which is neither pro-employee nor a free choice. What it really does is allow union bosses to force employers to recognize a union as the workforce’s bargaining agent without the hassle of a supervised, secret ballot election.

BIG LABOR COULD BLOW UP DEM CONVENTION
“Teamsters union leader James Hoffa Jr. joined the debate over Denver’s selection as host for the Democratic National Convention by confronting Gov. Bill Ritter at a Washington dinner and promising the issue could ‘blow up’ next summer if Colorado doesn’t become more labor-friendly.
“‘We’re very upset about it,’ the International Brotherhood of Teamsters president said of the Democrats’ decision to stage their convention at the nonunion Pepsi Center. In an interview Monday, Hoffa also mentioned Ritter’s veto of a law that might have made it easier to organize unions in Colorado. ‘All of labor is upset,’ Hoffa said.”

The Administration strongly opposes H.R. 800, the “Employee Free Choice Act.” H.R. 800 would strip workers of the fundamental democratic right to a supervised private ballot election, interfere with the ability of workers and employers to bargain freely and come to agreement over working terms and conditions, and impose penalties for unfair labor practices only on employers — and not on union organizers — who intimidate workers. If H.R. 800 were presented to the President, he would veto the bill.

Today, the Center for Union Facts notes the irony of three major union organizations in the “Change to Win” coalition being embroiled in labor disputes — with each other. The Teamsters-organized staff of Canada’s United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union went on strike to protest the UFCW’s proposed use of a two-tiered system in which new employees receive significantly less in wages and benefits than veteran employees.

With free legal aid from the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, two Schreiber Foods employees from Green Bay, Wisconsin, persuaded a federal appellate court to order the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to rule in a long-delayed case the workers filed in 1989. Having refrained from formal union membership, the workers are challenging union officials’ use of their forced union dues for activities unrelated to collective bargaining, particularly union organizing costs.
