New AFL-CIO Chief Vows Renewed Attacks on Business
Aug3
According to Politico, the new president of the AFL-CIO, Richard Trumka, is saying that under his leadership the union will relaunch its attacks on business and push harder for the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).
Trumka claims that unions were “outmaneuvered” so far on the debate on the EFCA. He is referring to reports that the card check feature has supposedly been excised from the bill due to the rising outrage that the secret ballot was to be eliminated for prospective union members.
Of course, the problem with this claim that the card check feature has been removed from the EFCA is that it could very easily be slipped right back in at any point in the process. There is no way to assure its demise until the bill is passed into law without it.
With that “loss” in mind, Trumka vows a renewed fight:
But the all-but-certain incoming president of the AFL-CIO says that legislative black eye will also carry a price — and warns that the business community and both parties ought to prepare for a more aggressive brand of labor politics once he’s in charge.
We can only hope this bellicosity will lead to a further isolation of unions and their downfall, but whatever happens in the long run, we might be looking for more fights in the short term.
