UAW Doesn’t Care if Auto Makers Having Trouble

On November 16, 2008, in Unions Revealed, by Warner Todd Huston

No more concessions from unions. That’s what the president of the United Auto Workers is saying, despite the downward spiral in the fortunes of US auto makers.

Ron Gettelfinger, UAW president, is quoted to that effect in the AP this weekend. “The focus has to be on the economy as a whole as opposed to a UAW contract,” he told reporters.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Gettlefinger wants to direct the gaze of taxayers away from the malfeasance of unions when a bailout is under consideration. But there is no reason not to look just as much at the unions as at the failed practices of the executives of the auto makers. After all, some of the biggest waste comes as a result of the undeserved benefits that unions are afforded.

President Gettelfinger’s obstreperous attitude, though, is a perfect example of why unions are a main obstacle to profitable business practices. Even when everything around them are going bankrupt, union thugs are attempting to force wasteful spending on their employers.

Any bailout to the the big three car makers is free and undeserved money to the unions. This bailout should be defeated.
