The California Nurses Association put out a press release yesterday on what happened in Michigan along with a few other recent SEIU actions that I thought might interest everyone. Remember, this is a CNA press release, and the Union Label Blog is not taking sides with either the CNA or the SEIU. As far as this blog is concerned they are both dangerous.

Federal Investigation of Use of Employer Funds in SEIU Las Vegas Election, Latest in a Pattern of Service Union Corruption and Violence, Says California Nurses Assn/NNOC

OAKLAND, Calif. - (Business Wire) Notice today that the Department of Labor is investigating a Las Vegas local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) on charges that it “used employer funds to promote certain candidates” in a union election is the latest in a pattern of corruption and violence emanating from the top leadership of SEIU President Andy Stern and SEIU, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee charged today.

News of the investigations coincides with other developments including:

  • A statement by AFL-CIO President John Sweeney issued today denouncing SEIU’s attack Saturday night at a conference of union members outside Detroit. “There is no justification – none – for the violent attack orchestrated by SEIU at the Labor Notes conference in Detroit,” he said, noting that “violence in any form is reprehensible. Violence in attacking freedom of speech must be strongly condemned. Any attempt to deny the right of free speech threatens the foundation of our movement and the future of working people.”
  • SEIU has been continuing a campaign of stalking and harassing CNA/NNOC leaders in their homes and where they work on patient care floors.
  • SEIU International has been charged with rigging the election of delegates to its upcoming convention in Puerto Rico.
  • Two SEIU locals have been charged with racketeering in a lawsuit filed in federal court in New York.

In Las Vegas, in a letter to Stern and SEIU Local 1107 in Las Vegas, the DOL District Director in San Francisco said it is investigating the use of employer funds both for the printing and mailing of campaign literature on behalf of one slate in the election, and the use of those funds for one slate while denying their use for an opposing candidate.

Additionally, the DOL is examining the use of SEIU funds transferred from another SEIU local in Ohio for one favored slate and other irregularities.

Las Vegas RNs at three Catholic Healthcare West hospitals recently filed for an election to join CNA/NNOC and leave SEIU Local 1107 in part due to disgust with such behavior, as well as a desire to be affiliated with the 10,500 CNA/NNOC members at 27 other CHW hospitals.
