Postal Unionistas Whine & Cheese Party

Hoo-hah! Boy, oh boy, did we stir up a hornet’s nest over at the postal union by posting a column written by Charles Guy of the Lexington Institute on the sweetheart deal the union just struck with the government monopoly that delivers your first-class mail.
Actually, some of the responses were rather thoughtful, but for the most part they followed the intellectual level expressed by “Pat” whose response concluded with, “so go f*ck yourself a**hole.” Class. Real class.
Quite a few responders could use a little cheese with their whine, including “Dan Shannon” who writes:
“How many hours do you work? How much time do you spend outdoors performing your job duties? How much do you make per year? What kind of perks do you get? Have you ever had to deal with violent customers, assault, vicious dogs, frostbite, and heat exhaustion? Do you walk eight or ten miles a day or do you sit at a keyboard in air conditioning judging the performance of letter carriers?”
Baa-waaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!
Actually, Dan, I generally only work half days…as in, 12 hours a day. And that includes Saturdays and part of every Sunday. In fact, I’m working right this very minute while on my vacation, Dan!
And as for you complaint about “violent customers,” that’s pretty ironic considering how many people have been violently killed by postal employees who have “gone postal” over the years.
And who, Dan, has a gun to your head forcing you to do the job you CHOSE to do? So stop whining like a little school-girl and grow a pair.
Um…er…never mind. Strike that last paragraph. I wouldn’t want you to “go postal” on me or anything. So, uh, could we forget I ever wrote that?

With 24 years in the USPS I feel I can offer some input. I’m not here in any way to chastise but I truly sense a frustration in your column. You can quite easily stir a nest in any business if thats what you set out to accomplish. And I just wonder if a patent and a monopoly are the same practice? You are correct in your assumption of no class in cussing and swearing, how ever, there is none in attacking another mans profession either. Mr. Muth I have to disagree with you when you claim to work 12 hour days 6 days a week and some on Sunday. I know that I could not physically do that as a letter carrier with out shortening the life span of my knee’s and back. And if you can do your job while on vacation, well Sir…I would call that more a hobby then I would a physically challenging job. And for the record “GOING POSTAL” not so true. Thats just become cliche in todays society because for what ever the reason people relate a mass killing to the postal service rather than label it say…GOING HIGH SCHOOL, GOING COLLEGE, GOING SKIN HEAD, or any other silly catch you can think of. The postal service is actually a very safe place to work. But like any other business with over 750,000 employees, your gonna find a bad one now and again. I do like my job Sir and no no one need hold a gun to my head. But until you wear a mailmans shoes I suggest you watch the nest you stir.
Have a great vacation, don’t work too hard
