The Employee Coerced Choice Act

The horribly misnamed “Employee Free Choice Act” is union-backed legislation which would eliminate secret ballots in union organizing elections and instead require employers to accept a union in their workplace if union agitators are able to intimidate a majority of workers into signing a “card” saying they want the union.

But as it turns out, union bosses - who increasingly are finding it next to impossible to get workers other than illegal aliens and government employees to join up - aren’t the only ones in favor of “card checks.” Liberals of all stripes are coming to Big Labor’s aid in this fight.

Why? Well, Peter Dreier, a professor at Occidental College, and Kelly Candaele, a trustee for the Los Angeles Community College District, explain it all in a recent column published in The Chronicle of Higher Education:

“Why should other constituencies rally behind the act? The reason is simple: The labor movement is still the most effective political force for electing liberal candidates at the local, state, and federal levels. And once in office, pro-labor politicians are typically the strongest supporters of the environment; the civil rights of women, homosexuals, and minority groups; universal health insurance; Social Security; affordable housing; and funds for public schools and higher education. A strong labor movement thus benefits other agendas and causes that have been under attack by conservative forces in recent years.”

The authors add:

“If unions become irrelevant, our society would become more unequal and individualistic than it already is. That is not a happy prospect, especially for those of us in higher education, which relies on the public’s support in many ways.”

Ominously, the educrats promise that “if the act becomes law, it would do more than increase union membership. It could lead to a rebirth of progressive politics in the United States.” They add that “a Democrat in the White House would guarantee that the act would become law.”

If any Republican or conservative was still unsure as to whether or not to oppose this terrible piece of un-American legislation, Dreier and Candaele have probably now removed all doubt.
