SHADEGG DENOUNCES DEMOCRAT EFFORTS TO ENABLE UNION INTIMIDATION OF WORKERS

Congressman Shadegg- Repealing secret ballots for union organizing is “Un-American.”

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today, Congressman John Shadegg denounced Democrat plans to bring H.R. 800, the grossly misnamed “Employee Free Choice Act,” to the floor this week. H.R. 800 would eliminate an employee’s right to a “secret ballot” election on questions of unionizing. Instead, the Democrat bill would allow decisions about representation to be ratified by merely signing an authorization card, a process that virtually guarantees union corruption.

“It is a fundamental American right to cast a ballot in secret to avoid intimidation and coercion,” Shadegg said. “This bill is un-American in its attempt to take away a basic right of employees across the country. If secret ballot elections are necessary for Members of Congress, they certainly should be required to protect workers in deciding to form, or not form, a union at their workplaces.”

Numerous court decisions have held that federally supervised “secret” ballot elections are the fairest and safest method for determining whether a union has the support of a majority of employees.

“For any member of Congress to support, let alone co-sponsor, this bill is disappointing,” said Shadegg. “It is particularly disappointing that a fellow Arizonan, from a strong right-to-work state, would turn his back on workers’ rights. I call on Harry Mitchell to remove his name as co-sponsor and reject this extreme legislation. This legislation is so radical, it has been endorsed and supported by the Communist Party USA. As a new member of Congress, Mr. Mitchell would do well to listen to his constituents back home, not East Coast based Big Labor.”
