ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST

“Brian M. McLaughlin, a Queens assemblyman who as head of the nation’s biggest municipal labor council personified New York City’s politically powerful labor movement, was arrested yesterday on federal racketeering charges involving embezzlement, receiving bribes, fraud and money laundering. Conviction on all 43 charges could send him to prison for decades.

“A 186-page indictment charges Mr. McLaughlin, 54, with illegally obtaining $2.2 million from taxpayers, labor unions and contractors over the last decade since he became president of the New York City Central Labor Council, a federation of 400 union locals.”

Card Checks for Thee, Gander Clause for Me

OK, let me try to boil this union “recruitment” thing down to it’s most basic level: An entrepreneur risks blood, sweat and tears, and often his life’s savings, to create a business - in the process creating jobs for others. Let’s say the company employs 100 people, all of whom willingly accept their jobs at the agreed-to compensation offered by the business owner. Then along comes the union Borg (“You will be assimilated!”).

Trouble for the Boss of Union Bosses

Ballots go out this week for a critically important election in November. No, not the referendum on what is passing for Republican “leadership” in Washington. I’m talking about the election to decide which big-government liberal union boss will run the Teamsters for the next several years.
