WHO’S THIS “WE,” PALEFACE
Teamsters President James P. Hoffa, preparing for negotiations with UPS, recently taunted the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, telling the Detroit Free Press that his union was far healthier than theirs. “We’re not laying anybody off; we’re hiring,” Hoffa told the Free Press. “We’re making money; they’re losing money — a lot of dissimilarities.”
“We’re” hiring? To hear Hoffa tell it, it’s the UNION that creates jobs, not the employer that the union negotiates with. “We’re” making money? Get real. Unions do make money in the sense that they extract dues from members, often unwillingly, in order to provide labor bosses such as Hoffa with hefty salaries and benefits, luxury cars and exotic vacations. But unions don’t “make” money in the traditional sense of the word, meaning you provide a service or product for sale to consumers.
Much as Hoffa wants you believe he creates jobs and wealth, the fact is unions are nothing more than leeches on the financial success of true entrepreneurs and capitalists. Turn union bosses loose to fend for themselves in a free market economy and they’d fall flat on their faces.

For the first time ever, the U.S. Postal Service is now negotiating new contracts with all four of its unions at the same time. This is an extraordinary opportunity for USPS to get its costs under control — especially considering that stamp prices just climbed to 39 cents, and USPS has already requested another increase to 42 cents, which will probably take effect next year.
So what, exactly, is driving prices upward?
Labor.

AFL-CIO President John Sweeney boasted recently that the union consortium intended to pour millions of dollars into this year’s Congressional elections — hardly a shocker. What is news is that this year, for the first time, rank-and-file union members are getting a look at precisely how much of their mandatory dues money is going to fund Mr. Sweeney’s political causes, and plenty of other interesting details as well.

SORRY RECORD
“(Teamster President James) Hoffa has a record to run on and it is a record of very weak contracts, the first pension cuts in the history of our union and the biggest dues increase in the history of our union that happened without a membership vote.”
- Tom Leedham, who is challenging Hoffa for the union boss’s seat in November, Associated Press, 9/12/06

TEAMING UP WITH THE TEAMSTERS
“Teamsters officials looking to unionize employees at the Santa Barbara News-Press organized a small group of dissident employees that ‘engaged in an intimidating and disruptive demonstration by proceeding en masse through the paper’s offices during business hours,’ according to a September 5 statement by the newspaper. As was the goal, the protest ‘intimidated, frightened and interfered with other workers.’

Big labor seeks to undermine cherished American tradition
Las Vegas Review Journal editorial
September 7, 2006
The only growth area for American organized labor in recent decades has been among government agencies, where the increased costs imposed by unionization can be easily passed on to the “customers” without concerns about losing market share to the competition … since government agencies allow no competition.
