“As GM goes, so goes the nation” was the old saw when General Motors was a corporate powerhouse. But now the car making behemoth is spilling red ink profusely and armies of bankruptcy attorneys are standing by.

LABOR BOSSES, DEMOCRATS STICK IT TO LATINOS
“A deal was at hand [in the Senate] that would have offered legal status to some illegal immigrants. It would have made the GOP seem more Latino-friendly, but it would also have infuriated organized labor, which opposes something that was in the mix: guest workers.
“After the Senate Judiciary Committee put out a guest-worker bill, AFL-CIO President John Sweeney issued a statement saying: ‘Guest-workers programs are a bad idea and harm all workers.’ That did it. Senate Democrats sided with labor, and sold out Latinos…
“The moral: Marches and Mexican flags don’t equal power. Labor uses millions of dollars in political contributions to take care of Democrats, and so Democrats take care of labor.”
- San Diego Union-Tribune columnist Ruben Navarrette

“Imagine you pick up your newspaper one morning and read that the Republican Party has given control of George W. Bush’s reelection campaign to Halliburton, the oil and gas company that has taken on the specter of Darth Vader-like evil to the American left. It turns out that Halliburton is spending millions of corporate dollars-none of it collected from voluntary contribution-to finance ads and grassroots activity for the Republicans.

From the April 14, 2006 “Union Facts” e-newsletter…
Stop us if you’ve heard this one: What happens to a union president who leaves his post amid allegations of recklessly investing members’ pension money? He gets a golden parachute and a “tribute” dinner worth tens of thousands more of members’ money. Unfortunately, this isn’t a joke.
Last week, the Center for Union Facts reported on the golden parachutes paid to former Plumbers international union officials. According to the union’s 2005 financial filings with the Department of Labor, the Plumbers handed out golden parachutes to former General President Martin Maddaloni ($1.3 million in total compensation) and Secretary-Treasurer Thomas Patchell (almost $900,000 in total compensation). The two resigned in November 2004 after an apparently unsuccessful investment of members’ pension funds in a Florida hotel. According to the Association for Union Democracy, the buyout agreement included “salaries and benefits plus free use of cars and other perks through the end of 2006.”
But this week, we found something even stranger. Read the rest of this entry »

THE BROTHERHOOD OF ILLEGAL ALIENS
“Unions were heavily involved in yesterday’s demonstrations. They’re looking for something that will bring them more members. Members = power. Jamie Contreras is a spokesman for the Service Employees International Union. Contreras said: ‘The immigrant sleeping giant is now wide awake. People are paying very close attention to the attacks that are happening, both in the Senate and in the House. We’re fed up. We’re tired. We’re here to show our strength in numbers.’
“Now…did you hear that ‘people are paying close attention to the attacks that are happening…’ line? What’s he talking about? He’s talking about people, both in our Congress and in the general population who are asking that our laws be enforced and our borders controlled. These words, according to Contreras, are ‘attacks.’”
- Talk show host Neal Boortz
